Uga Gymdogs Schedule
As a member of three national championship teams, Johnson is considered to be one of the top gymnasts in Georgia history. In 2010 she was the only gymnast in the SEC to receive a perfect 10, which she earned on the balance beam. That capped off her total of three perfect tens in her career as a Gym Dog. Johnson earned five All-America honors during her career and won the 2008 NCAA beam title. She graduated from UGA in May with a degree in Health Promotion. She is currently enrolled in graduate school and will serve as a graduate assistant on the Gym Dogs’ staff in 2011-12.
The other eight finalists for the award are Danielle Blair (UAB soccer), Annie Chandler (Arizona swimming), Victoria Hansen (West Liberty basketball), Hewenfei Elwen Li (BYU-Hawaii tennis), Kelsey Ward (Drury swimming), Laura Barito (Stevens Institute of Technology swimming, track and cross country), Michaela Calnan (Bowdoin College field hockey and ice hockey), and Hayley Emerick (Trinity University Texas diving).
The Georgia gymnastics team will face six teams that competed in the 2011 NCAA Championships, including home meets against UCLA and Arkansas, as the 2012 schedule was announced Thursday.
“We have a home schedule I think our fans will enjoy,” said head coach Jay Clark. “UCLA is coming here, and we all know the history and tradition they have. We have Arkansas at home, and they have been in the NCAA Championships the last several years. There aren’t any gimmes anymore, and anybody can beat anybody. We expect to get a fight in every meet.”
For the second straight year, the Gym Dogs will open the season against Denver in Athens on Jan. 6. Last year, Georgia started the season by winning a quad-meet at Denver.
Georgia will then travel to defending national champion Alabama on Jan. 13 followed by a trip to Auburn on Jan. 20. The Gym Dogs will return home to face LSU on Jan. 28 before a trip to Utah on Feb. 3. Arkansas will visit Stegeman Coliseum on Feb. 10, then a home meet against Kentucky on Feb. 18 precedes a trip to Florida on Feb. 24.
Georgia and UCLA will then square off in Athens on March 2. The two teams have combined to win the last eight NCAA titles – five by the Gym Dogs and three by the Bruins. Dating back to 1997, the Gym Dogs and Bruins have won 13 of the last 14 national championships.
A trip to Michigan on March 9 marks the final regular season road meet, then Georgia will celebrate Senior Day on March 11 against NC State.
The SEC Championship this year will be held March 24 in Duluth, Ga., at Gwinnett Arena. That will also be the site of the NCAA Championships April 20-22, hosted by Georgia Tech.
The NCAA Regionals will be held April 7 in Seattle, Salt Lake City, Fayetteville, Ark., Urbana, Ill., Raleigh, N.C., and Auburn, Ala.
